Darien Refuse Station Accepts the Following Items for Recycling

Commingle these glass, metal & plastic items: All items to be clean
Glass – food packaging, labels on OK
NO: window glass

Metal – food packaging, labels on OK Try to keep the lids on if possible

Plastic – food or cleaning packaging with # 1 & # 2 – found inside ? on
bottom. Lids are almost always NOT #1 or #2 so toss them in the trash.

Cardboard – corrugated (rippled center) - needs to be flattened
includes brown paper grocery bags with no string or plastic handles
NO: food residue (i.e. pizza boxes)
NO: paperboard/chipboard (cereal or tissue boxes, soda cases, or egg cartons)

Newspaper & Mixed paper – Commingled :
includes unprinted newspaper that has been used as packaging paper
white or colored office paper
envelopes (windows OK)
catalogs & magazines
glossy newspaper inserts or junk mail
manila folders and 3x5 cards
wrapping tissue paper
telephone Books – cover removed
holiday cards – no photos or metallic paper
NO: waxed cartons, facial tissue, paper towels, or waxed paper to which such items as
stamps or labels have been affixed
NO: paperboard/chipboard such as cereal boxes, tissue boxes, or egg cartons
NO: wrapping paper – some is OK and some is not, so don’t include any at all

Place in paper bags or loose if you are putting them in the paper trailer yourself. Newspapers tied w/string OK, but not preferred. NO PLASTIC BAGS

Metal – non food items such as screens, bikes, hangers, etc. – separate disposal area near recyclables

Oil – Used motor oil – check with the weigh house attendant for disposal

Leaves/Brush – dump these in area to right of trash area & next summer collect free compost

Rocks – drop off behind leaf drop area

Logs – drop off behind compost pile behind weigh house

Tires – drop off behind compost pile behind weigh house

Used clothes – in bins across from weigh house (see also reverse side)

Check with your hauler to see what they take, other items you can deliver yourself w/ annual permit

Recycling Everything Else Not Accepted at the Darien Refuse Station:


Electronics – look for annual collection dates posted in local newspapers & check DEG website
contact the DEG regarding the name of someone who might collect computers for recycling
Yerwood Center – 90 Fairfield Ave., Stamford – 327-2790 accepts usable computers

Household Hazardous Waste – including oil based paints and rechargeable batteries: look for annual
collection dates posted on town web page and in local newspapers – usually first Saturday in June at Darien Town Hall. Webpage will show surrounding town dates.

Printer Cartridges – Box at message center in rotunda of Middlesex Middle School

CD’s – Collection boxes in the lower lobby at the back of Town Hall and at the Darien Nature Center

Burned out Florescent Tubes and Compact Florescent Bulbs – Since they contain mercury, they should
be safely stored and taken to Household Hazardous Waste Day the 1st Saturday in June.

Styrofoam Peanuts – bag (taped dry cleaner bags are good) and take to UPS Store in Goodwives
Shopping Center or check with retail stores that ship gift items as they will often welcome them

Usable clothing & household items – Salvation Army bin at Refuse Station

Unwanted cell/mobile phones and PDA’s – Cell phones contain toxic elements like Mercury, Cadmium, Lead, and other poisonous materials that shouldn’t be thrown into a landfill. Collection box in the lower lobby at the back of Town Hall. Otherwise, they should be saved for an electronics collection day.

Used sneakers – regardless of condition/brand – NO METAL PARTS (i.e. grommets – please cut off) - are collected during April & May to be returned to Nike to be ground into field underlayment. During those months only boxes can be found in the lower lobby at the back of Town Hall, The Depot, in the Darien High School and Middle school lobbies, the Darien Nature Center, and the YMCA. Watch the newspaper for details.

Unwanted LP tanks – cannot go to Household Hazardous Waste Day or in the metal bin at the transfer station, but can be taken to Hocon Gas 33 Rockland Rd. in South Norwalk – just down from UPS

Remember – if you throw in the trash what could have been recycled,
you are throwing away your tax dollars as well as valuable natural resources.
